Michael Warren Summarizes New California Wage Theft Law

On Jan. 1, 2022, California’s new wage theft law took effect. AB 1003 seeks to punish employers for stealing employees’ wages by making intentional wage theft punishable as grand theft. Partner Michael Warren examines this new law in an article for the Daily Journal’s annual “New Laws” supplement.

Michael says, “The key aspect of AB 1003 is the intentionality of the wage theft.” Unintentional mistakes by the employer will not be actionable under the law, but he encourages all employers – including those who hire independent contractors – to review their employee compensation policies and practices.
