Legal Workshop: Attorney Gender Bias and the Practice of Law

November 3, 2015 McManis Faulkner

Despite years of effort in trying to eliminate gender bias, the American Bar Association’s Commission on Women in the Profession cites “persistent gender discrimination throughout the legal system.” In this one hour presentation, retired Santa Clara County Judge, Hon. Kevin Murphy, discussed the subtle and obvious forms of discrimination and abuse that contribute to gender bias in the law firm as well as the court room. Through an examination of Weeks v. Baker & McKenzie, a case where a former employee sued and won a 3.5 million dollar sexual harassment claim against a major law firm, Judge Murphy discussed common sense solutions that law firms can implement to minimize a firm’s liability to such claims, and to create a safer workplace for all.  The seminar was held in the firm’s offices.
