James McManis was recently quoted in San Jose Spotlight regarding the ongoing battle over the San Jose mayor’s handling of emails pertaining to public business. In a discussion with a homeless advocate, the mayor encouraged the advocate to communicate on the mayor’s private email. In addition, the mayor promised to delete their emails on the City server for reasons which are yet unknown.
San Jose Spotlight credited Jim and the McManis Faulkner team for their landmark public records victory against the City of San Jose in 2017, saying Jim and the firm are the reason why government officials must disclose communications from private accounts if they deal with public business.
Jim calls the act of shielding emails “slippery,” adding, “If it’s concerning City business, it must be disclosed, private emails or not.”
