Priya Swaminathan


An experienced civil trial lawyer, Priya guides her clients through complex and challenging cases with care and compassion.

Licensed in both New York and California, Priya has represented both institutional and individual clients in a wide variety of commercial matters, including real estate disputes, fraud and breach of contract actions, business torts, white collar matters, and defamation suits.  She also has extensive experience with civil rights cases.  As a participant in the Ninth Circuit’s Pro Bono Program, Priya regularly represents pro se defendants in their appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In addition, she has experience with alternate dispute resolution, including mediation and arbitration.

    Representative Matters

    • Successfully briefed and argued an appellate brief before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals for a transgender inmate seeking sex reassignment surgery.
    • Successfully defended a motion for summary disposition in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
    • Mediated a case for an immigrant resulting in cancellation of his deportation order.
    • Successfully settled a real estate dispute on terms favorable to client.
    • Represented a major bank in consumer fraud action, resulting in dismissal of all charges.
    • Represented an author in a dispute with a publisher, settling all claims favorably before the filing of suit.
    • Was part of a team which successfully secured an eight-figure judgment for client in precedent setting case before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals
